LEGO MICRO CITIES
LEGO Micro Cities grow from the foundation of creative constraints. Each city is constructed on a 20 x 20 LEGO stud base measuring 6 inches, or 15 centimetres, square. Building a mini-metropolis on this modest footprint requires reimagining how LEGO elements are used. Headlight elements morph into houses, curved fence pieces become a colosseum, and radar dishes are stacked to form elegant skyscrapers.
Transforming free-form city ideas into real-world creations poses another challenge. The original concepts always undergo changes enforced by LEGO’s precise geometry. As with full-scale architecture, creative compromises and puzzle-solving are added to the usual artistic pillars of color and form.
When I’m building a LEGO city visions of its history and culture flow through my mind. I envision the everyday lives of its citizens, and become the architect working on behalf of these imaginary people.
